Femme Den Speaks at IDSA National Conference
The Femme Den, an internal movement at Smart Design dedicated to designing products that satisfy the unmet needs of women consumers, will present at the IDSA National Conference titled Polar Opposites on Thursday, September 11th at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix.
The Femme Den’s session, titled “Design and Gender: Thinking About Sex”, focuses on the important role that gender plays in design and will be conducted by Erica Eden, Whitney Hopkins, Gina Reimann, and Yvonne Lin.
The session will address how women have an enormous amount of purchasing power. One commonly cited statistic asserts that women buy or influence 80 percent of consumer and business goods and services and 65 percent of new car purchases are executed or influenced by women. Over the years we have witnessed social, cultural and economic changes blurring the boundaries between gender roles. What was once known to be a traditionally male task has now grown into a female role as well. This change has affected dynamics in the home, work and social environment. Even though females have been taking on these new roles, they often have to use products that were not designed with them in mind. As a result, females end up having to adjust their bodies and movements to fit particular products. Shouldn’t this be the other way around?
